Incoming Links
Incoming links, sometimes known as backward links or inbound links, are the links that other website owners place on their websites to link directly to your website. Incoming links are another very important factor when the search engines analyse your website and rank it accordingly. But what types of links should you use? Should you use attractive images or text links? What text would you want other website owners to use to link back to your website? Do you have any control over inbound links? What is the difference between Inbound, Outbound and Reciprocal links?
There are 3 main types of links. All have their own uses and are a valuable addition to your website and the website who you would like a link from.
Inbound Links
One Way Inbound links - are links that lead in to your website from another site. One Way Incoming links are the best types of links as you don't have to link back to these websites, they're offering you something for nothing in the form of free traffic to your website. These types of links can greatly improve you website rankings, especially if the referring website has a similar topic as your own.
Outbound Links
One-Way Outgoing links (also known as "outbound links") are links you place on your own website which direct your visitors to other sites. Outgoing links are the weakest type of link as you are effectively directing your visitors away from your website to another one. On the plus side, if your site is very informational, your visitors may well return and appreciate your site even more for its willingness to point them to other relevant resources.
Reciprocal Links
Two-way reciprocal links or link exchanges are when your site links out to another website, and that website links back to yours. they're essentially a link trade. Reciprocal links can be beneficial when you're trying to market your site, especially if they are set up between complementary sites, but their value is dropping as the search engines tend to discount such "mutual admiration" relationships.
Images or Text Links
Images used as links look very attractive and can promote your products or services effectively but remember the search engines can't see your pictures. All they see is a piece if HTML code telling them there is an image here. Search engines don't follow image links, so all your graphic design talent will go to waste. Text links are the best type of link to use. Although they are just plain text, the search engines will follow these links and count them as inbound links. Also, if you use keywords and keyphrases within your inbound link text it will greatly improve your rankings over time as your links build in number. If you must use an image, make sure it is accompanied by a textual equivalent. Always advise the other website owner as to which type of links you want them to use; after all it's your rankings at stake.
